- Notes: Choral Evensong at St. Andrew’s, Newcastle A service of Choral Evensong for Lent will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Glidden Street, Newcastle, on Sunday, March 23rd, 4:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the Senior Choir under the direction of Linda Blanchard with organist Sean Fleming. All are welcome. The service features choral music of England, including choral responses by 17th century composer Richard Ayleward and a setting of Psalm 121 “I will lift up my eyes to the hills” by 18th century composer Charles Wesley (brother of Methodist founder John Wesley). The Magnificat (Song of Mary) and Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon) will be from the Short Service in Dorian mode by Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis. The anthem will be a lovely setting of Psalm 42 “As the deer longs for the water brooks” by American composer Peter Pindar Stearns. Experience this ancient service of rare and mystical beauty in which the Word is illuminated through hymns, prayers, choral music and chant, set in beautiful historic sanctuary of St. Andrew’s Church.
