- Notes: St. Cecilia Chamber Choir will perform a concert of Musical Potpourri celebrating spring on Saturday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. The chorus is directed by Linda Blanchard and accompanied by pianist Sean Fleming. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged for this popular event. The concert will include Gustav Holst’s “6 Choral Folksongs,” Op.36, including the Hampshire folksongs “I Sowed the Seeds of Love,” “There Was a Tree,” and “The Song of the Blacksmith,” the West Country song “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,” the Cornish song “I Love My Love,” and the sprightly “Swansea Town.” Holst composed this set of folksongs in 1916, the same year he finished his well-known suite “The Planets.” Selections from Ned Rorem’s mischievous “What Is Pink?” will also be featured. Commissioned in 1987 by The American Boychoir, this set includes settings of the poems “What Is Pink?” and “Who Has Seen The Wind” by Christina Rossetti, and “The Mysterious Cat” by Vachel Lindsay. St. Cecilia’s May program will also include the Byrd “This Sweet and Merry Month of May,” the Gibbons “Fair is the Rose” and “The Silver Swan,” Schubert’s “Der Gondelfahrer” for men’s chorus, Fauré’s “Madrigal,” an arrangement of the beautiful “Annie Laurie” by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw, Lauridsen’s exquisite setting of the Rainer Maria Rilke poem “Dirait-On,” a arrangement of the famous “Mission Impossible” theme, and more! For more than 20 years, St. Cecilia Chamber Choir has been providing challenging musical opportunities and music scholarships for gifted local youth. Since the Choir’s inception, over 25 gifted young students have sung with us, many continuing to study and perform music in college and beyond. A limited amount of pay-what-you-want tickets will be available at the door before each concert. To make sure to get a ticket, purchase one in advance soon for $15 at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta or online at ceciliachoir.org. Children and students are always free.
