- Notes: Local soprano, Abbey Hutchins, will present a solo vocal recital accompanied by Sean Fleming at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle on Friday, September 30 at 7:00. Hutchins lives on Southport Island and is a sophomore at Lincoln Academy. She has studied privately for a number of years with voice teacher, Beth Preston. She developed her love for music at an early age, singing with community and church choirs. When she attended her first Broadway play at the age of four, she discovered her love for musical theater. She has since been involved in local shows, performing with the Boothbay YArts, Click!, and Heartwood Regional Theater Company. Abbey has been seen on stage in numerous productions including Annie (Molly), Into the Woods (Little Red Riding Hood), Godspell (Ensemble), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Miss Flannery), Once On This Island (Erzulie), and Little Women (Amy). Recently, Abbey has been drawn to classical and operatic voice performances, and has expanded her repertoire to include high soprano compositions. Last year, Abbeyparticipated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition for the state of Maine, and placed first in her age division in both the Broadway and Classical categories. The first half of Abbey’s program will be classical repertoire including Italian art songs by Pergolesi, Caldara, Paisiello, and Lotti. She will also sing two pieces by American composers, Amy Beach and Lee Hoiby. The second half of her program takes a chronological trip through the musical theater repertoire written for “ingenue” roles with songs from Carousel, The Music Man, Street Scene, Camelot, Sweeney Todd, and The Light In the Piazza. There is no charge for the recital, but donations will be accepted.
